The Best Hiking Trails in and Around the Burgh

Although we are city lovers ourselves, nothing beats a good morning or afternoon surrounded by trees and sunshine. Pittsburgh has more to offer than just the hustle and bustle of city life. Check out these great trails and turn your out-of-office email on!


In the City

1. Frick Park

Pittsburgh's largest municipal park, Frick Park offers over 600 acres of scenic trails. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced hiker, you’ll find a trail you enjoy. The best part is you can walk through forests, meadows, and even streams, all within city limits.

2. Schenley Park

Just a short drive from downtown, Schenley Park has a variety of great trails that move alongside Panther Hollow Lake. You can also catch a glimpse of the city's skyline view if you look closely!

3. Riverview Park

Sitting in Pittsburgh’s North Side, Riverview Park offers a more difficult terrain and wooded trails. Check out Observatory Hill or the Allegheny Observatory for a quick science lesson.

4. Beechview-Seldom Seen Greenway

This trail is definitely a hidden treasure. In the heart of Beechview, the Seldom Seen Greenway is an unexpected pocket of peace with its quiet, wooded trails. A great spot for a quick escape from city life!

5. Mount Washington Trails

Of course we had to include the Mount Washington trails that offer the most iconic views of the city. The trails here are known for their scenic overlooks and steep climbs!

6. Toms Run Nature Reserve

Toms Run is about 10 miles outside of the city. It's the perfect 3 mile loop for a morning or afternoon nature walk.

7. North Park

From pickleball courts to trails, North Park has everything you need to enjoy some time outdoors. Whether you want to relax or have some fun, the park offers rentals for canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards, allowing you to enjoy the water your way. Located just a short distance from the city, you can spend the entire day at North Park and even top it off with a sweet treat.

8. Fall Run Park Trail

The perfect 1.4 mile trail for your quick nature fix! Located just 20 minutes away from the hotel with an incredible waterfall. It's close to a park and perfect for families.


Beyond the City

1. McConnells Mill State Park

Just a short drive from Pittsburgh, this state park is known for its stunning gorge, waterfalls, and historic gristmill. If you're up for a challenge our recommendation would be the Slippery Rock Gorge Trail!

2. Ohiopyle State Park

Home to the beautiful Youghiogheny River and miles of hiking trails, Ohiopyle offers something for everyone. Explore the Ferncliff Peninsula, hike to Cucumber Falls, or take on the Laurel Highlands Trail.

3. Moraine State Park

Located about an hour north of Pittsburgh, Moraine State Park has many diverse trails through forests, along lakeshores, and across rolling hills. The Glacier Ridge Trail is definitely a highlight, offering some of our favorite scenery.

4. Raccoon Creek State Park

About 30 miles outside of the city, Raccoon Creek is the spot for nature lovers! Experience mineral springs and falls throughout their many trails ranging from beginner to difficult.
